COMMODITY BENCHMARKING ENGINEER

Job Description:

This position supports the Global Total Cost (GTC) Benchmarking activities, specifically focusing on Commodity Benchmarking studies involving chassis and underbody components. The main objective of Commodity Benchmarking at Ford is to evaluate and compare part designs, features and technologies of internal benchmarks along with other OEMs within and outside of the automotive industry. It also helps to identify opportunities for complexity reduction between Ford products and within a vehicle series. Commodity Benchmarking is a proven process enabling teams to identify best practices, maintain a competitive edge and reduce part costs of existing designs to make Ford more profitable and competitive in the marketplace. It is also an enabler to assist forward model programs in the development and achievement of program cost targets. As a Commodity Benchmarking Engineer, you will play a key role in helping to meet corporate cost objectives. You will also be exposed to exciting new products and technology and will be joining an agile team of doers making a difference at Ford by working collaboratively and delivering excellence day in and day out.

What You’ll Do…

  • Play a key and vital role in meeting corporate cost objectives for both existing products and forward model vehicles:
    • Identify and generate cost savings/avoidance ideas
    • Document and facilitate the maturation of cost savings/avoidance ideas

  • Manage and complete Commodity Benchmarking activities and studies at the Dearborn Benchmarking Center and work with other regional counterparts. Responsibilities will include:
    • Working with study requestors to understand objectives, scope, timing and other relevant information
    • Identification of Ford and competitive part requirements and determination of best method to obtain physical properties
    • Coordination of part logistics and teardown
    • Coordination with local Cost Estimating support
    • Layout of physical parts for review
    • Leading workshops and ideation
  • Supplement Commodity Benchmarking studies with data gathered by researching available internal and external data sources. Potential data to be gathered:
      • Feature content
      • Photos
      • Available benchmarking data
      • Engineering drawings
      • Material specifications
      • Series differentiation
      • Existing cost reduction ideas
      • Previous benchmarking studies
  • Leading and coordinating the development of a professional Summary Report for each study
  • Scheduling and facilitating Report Out meetings
  • Keeping the Commodity Benchmarking tracking matrix updated as studies progress
  • Providing recommendations for additional commodity studies to be initiated and important commodity attributes/data to be collected

  • Good Microsoft skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Office, Teams)
